Book excerpt: "This book shows us the face of Earth’s sixth great mass extinction, revealing that this century is a time of darkness for the world’s birds and mammals. In The Annihilation of Nature, three of today’s most distinguished conservationists tell the stories of the birds and mammals we have lost and those that are now on the road to extinction. These tragic tales, coupled with eighty-three color photographs from the world’s leading nature photographers, display the beauty and biodiversity that humans are squandering."--Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Have you ever asked yourself; Who am I? Where is my life going? Is there a purpose and meaning to it all? The answers are often hidden in plain sight, within the fabric of our own individual journey. I HEARD THE CURLEW CRY is the story of one woman's spiritual odyssey in pursuit of these answers. The journey is fraught with dangers and suffering, but is also shot through with courage, wisdom and an irrepressible sense of humour. As the story unfolds, she must let go of what has defined her for many years - her convent community, her Catholicism, her country. Not just a record of events, this is a story of healing and what it means to become an artist rather than a victim of life's events. In a world struggling with fear and loss of meaning, this book offers a message of hope and a creative perspective on the evolving soul journey we all must take.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost Cause ideology that emerged after the Civil War and flourished in the early twentieth century in essence sought to recast a struggle to perpetuate slavery as a heroic defense of the South. As Adam Domby reveals here, this was not only an insidious goal; it was founded on falsehoods. The False Cause focuses on North Carolina to examine the role of lies and exaggeration in the creation of the Lost Cause narrative. In the process the book shows how these lies have long obscured the past and been used to buttress white supremacy in ways that resonate to this day. Domby explores how fabricated narratives about the war’s cause, Reconstruction, and slavery—as expounded at monument dedications and political rallies—were crucial to Jim Crow. He questions the persistent myth of the Confederate army as one of history’s greatest, revealing a convenient disregard of deserters, dissent, and Unionism, and exposes how pension fraud facilitated a myth of unwavering support of the Confederacy among nearly all white Southerners. Domby shows how the dubious concept of "black Confederates" was spun from a small number of elderly and indigent African American North Carolinians who got pensions by presenting themselves as "loyal slaves." The book concludes with a penetrating examination of how the Lost Cause narrative and the lies on which it is based continue to haunt the country today and still work to maintain racial inequality.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for The Wainwright Prize for UK Nature Writing 2020 'A rare breed of a book ... to be greatly treasured' - Daily Mail Desperate to connect with his native Galloway, Patrick Laurie plunges into work on his family farm in the hills of southwest Scotland. Investing in the oldest and most traditional breeds of Galloway cattle, he begins to discover how cows once shaped people, places and nature in this remote and half-hidden place. This traditional breed requires different methods of care from modern farming on an industrial, totally unnatural scale. As the cattle begin to dictate the pattern of his life, Patrick stumbles upon the passing of an ancient rural heritage. Always one of the most isolated and insular parts of the country, as the twentieth century progressed, the people of Galloway deserted the land and the moors have been transformed into commercial forest in the last thirty years. The people and the cattle have gone, and this withdrawal has shattered many centuries of tradition and custom. Much has been lost, and the new forests have driven the catastrophic decline of the much-loved curlew, a bird which features strongly in Galloway's consciousness. The links between people, cattle and wild birds become a central theme as Patrick begins to face the reality of life in a vanishing landscape.

Book excerpt: On the land of his ancestors in Scotland, a young farmer struggles to find a balance between farming, the conservation of wild, and human culture as he establishes a herd of heritage cattle. Galloway, an ancient region in an obscure corner of Scotland, has a proud and unique heritage based on hardy cattle and wide moors. But as the twentieth century progressed, the people of Galloway deserted the land and the moors are transforming into a vast commercial forest. Desperate to connect with his native land, Patrick Laurie plunges into work on his family farm. Investing in the oldest and most traditional breeds of Galloway cattle, he begins to discover how cows—and the special care that this breed requires—once shaped people, places, and nature in this remote and half-hidden place. As the cattle begin to dictate the pattern of his life, Laurie stumbles upon another loss; the new forests have driven the catastrophic decline of the much-loved curlew, a bird that features strongly in Galloway's consciousness. The links between people, cattle, and wild birds become a central theme as Laurie begins to face the reality of life in a vanishing landscape. Exploring the delicate balance between farming and conservation while recounting an extraordinarily powerful personal story, Galloway delves into the relationship between people and places under pressure in the modern world.

Book excerpt: This is a fictionalised account of the life of the Princess Gwenllian, known as the 'Welsh Warrior Princess.' Born 30 years after the Norman invasion to the king of Gwynnedd, she is predicted by the bard Meilyr to become a great leader and trains with her brothers in the warrior arts. Against her father's wishes, Gwenllian elopes with the young Prince Gruffudd ap Rhys, who has returned from exile in Ireland to try to reclaim his family's lands in the province of Deheubarth. From this time, the path is set for the young couple to provide the greatest challenge to Norman rule ever mounted in Wales. Prince Gruff and Gwenllian embark on a life of hardship in the mountains where they raise a young family, and live out a life of extraordinary valour, courage and honour, as they raise an army against the devious King Henry 1st. They find both success and failure, and their military struggle is mirrored by their personal conflicts, with Gwenllian emerging as a true heroine of the Welsh, as they found the family line which produces the Lord Rhys, and 150 years later, Owain Glyndower.

Book excerpt: An epic emotional journey about love and sacrifice set between the magical Isle of Skye and the promising new frontier of distant Tasmania. 'Oh, how magnificent,' Christy's granddaughter breathed as the ferry followed a curve in the water and they had a clear view of Dunvegan Castle at the end of the loch. 'It's like a fairy-tale castle.' She turned to Christy, her face radiant. 'How does it feel to be home again after all this time?' Christy felt the tears prick and gathered the tartan shawl closer, her gaze avoiding the hated castle and all it stood for. 'I don't know whether to laugh or cry,' she confessed. 'I've seen so many changes already that I'm almost frightened of what I'll find when we arrive . . .' 1905. Christy has always dreamed of making the journey from her home in Tasmania back to the wild and beautiful Scottish island where she was born - the Isle of Skye, nicknamed 'cloud island' by the Old Norse people - to once again lay eyes on the tumbling waterfalls and dramatic coastlines of her homeland. And now, in her sixty-fifth year, Christy has finally decided to go, her mistrustful daughter Anne and beloved granddaughter Kathryn acting as companions. But what Anne and Kathryn don't realise is that Christy's past is darker and more textured than they could know, and that in returning to Skye they will unearth bittersweet memories long-buried - memories that will ultimately change the course of the three women's lives forever.

Eight years of turmoil; emotional, philosophical and, most delightfully, meteorological. Jeremy lives and writes in Darwin, the crossroads of cyclonic turmoil in northern Australia. His enjoyment of storms and their encroachment is plainly evident within these pages. His poetry has hitherto graced the local open-mic events, appeared in a number of magazines (both on & off line), featured in three international anthologies, and been written into a couple of theatrical productions.
