About the Authors Chinchilla Facts Many animal babies are born with all their fur, or complete with feathers, but the chinchilla kit is one of the few animals that is born with its eyes wide open. Even puppies are born with their eyes closed! Chinchillas cannot get their fur wet, so instead of bathing in water, chinchillas use volcanic ash to clean their fur. This ash is found in the mountains where chinchillas live in the wild. When chinchillas are kept as pets, the chinchillas owner must purchase ash for the chinchilla to bathe in several times a week. Chinchillas have very special little hands that can grab and hold items in much the same way that a human grabs and holds items. Chinchillas are highly unique because they are one of the few species in the wild that are monogamous. This means that they choose a partner, and keep that same partner for life. While all chinchillas are small in size, especially compared to more common mammals like dogs and cats, the chinchilla’s body size is interesting because unlike most other mammal groups, the chinchilla females are usually a bit larger than the males. This is seen more often in spiders, and even birds, but very rarely in mammals. Most wild chinchillas are grey or brown in color, while domestic (pet) chinchillas are the more colorful, with white, beige, and violet being common. Wild chinchillas in the Andes mountains rarely actually drink water because they eat a lot of fruits and succulent plants. Succulent plants are plants in the cactus family that hold a lot of water in them. The water inside the fruits and plants that the chinchilla eats gives them most of the water they need to live.

Where do deer live? True deer versus other deer Muntjac White-tailed deer Roe deer Moose Elk Fallow deer Brocket Pudu Conclusion Author Bio Introduction Once upon a time, the word that deer was based on meant any wild animal, and venison meant any meat caught from a wild animal. Similar words still exist in other languages besides English, but for several reasons, they didn't narrow it down to what is now a deer. Deer are often seen as one of the most graceful kinds of animals. They live throughout the world, except in Antarctica and Australia. Women with brown eyes are often described as 'doe eyed', because most deer (does are female deer) have beautiful brown eyes. Deer also factor into myth and legend; among many instances of deer, there comes the story of the Ancient Greek goddess Artemis, who turned a peeping hunter into a deer to punish him. Deer were also said to pull her chariot. Reindeer, another type of deer, pull Santa Claus's sleigh. Celts considered deer to be a sort of 'fairy cattle', milked and herded by fairies much like the Celts milked and herded cows. The deer is a beautiful creature, and it's no wonder it's captured the imagination of many ancient and current thinkers.

Book excerpt: A young reader’s adaptation of whistleblower and bestselling author Edward Snowden's memoir, Permanent Record—featuring a brand-new afterword that includes resources to learn about the basics of digital security. In 2013, Edward Snowden shocked the world when he revealed that the United States government was secretly building a system of mass surveillance with the ability to gaze into the private lives of every person on earth. Phone calls, text messages, emails—nothing was safe from prying eyes. Now the man who risked everything to expose the truth about government spying describes for a new generation how he helped build that system, what motivated him to try to bring it down, and how young people can strive to protect their privacy in the digital age. “Snowden's sprightly prose, his deep technical knowledge, his superb knack for explaining complex matters, his ability to articulate principled action all come together in a book that is, if anything, BETTER than the adult version.” —Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing

Book excerpt: In 1967, a twenty-five-year-old refugee named Bashir Khairi traveled from the Palestinian hill town of Ramallah to Ramla, Israel, with a goal: to see the beloved stone house with the lemon tree in its backyard that he and his family had been forced to leave nineteen years earlier. When he arrived, he was greeted by one of its new residents: Dalia Eshkenazi Landau, a nineteen-year-old Israeli college student whose family had fled Europe following the Holocaust. She had lived in that house since she was eleven months old. On the stoop of this shared house, Dalia and Bashir began a surprising friendship, forged in the aftermath of war and later tested as political tensions ran high and Israelis and Palestinians each asserted their own right to live on this land. Adapted from the award-winning adult book and based on Sandy Tolan's extensive research and reporting, The Lemon Tree is a deeply personal story of two people seeking hope, transformation, and home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A middle grade adaptation of the adult bestseller that chronicles what The New York Times deemed "one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever": Alex Honnold's free-solo ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. On June 3, 2017, as seen in the Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo, Alex Honnold achieved what most had written off as unattainable: a 3,000-foot vertical climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, without a rope or harness. At the time, only a few knew what he was attempting to do, but after topping out at 9:28 am, having spent just under four hours on this historic feat, author Mark Synnott broke the story for National Geographic and the world watched in awe. Now adapted for a younger audience, The Impossible Climb tells the gripping story of how a quiet kid from Sacramento, California, grew up to capture the attention of the entire globe by redefining the limits of human potential through hard work, discipline, and a deep respect for the natural world.
