Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on three essential elements of agricultural supply chains: Planting and Growing, Processing and Selling, and Government Interventions. For decades, most agricultural economists applied macro-economic theory in decisions pertaining to the optimization of food production and distribution. However, few researchers used micro-economic theory to examine how individual farmers respond to market information, incentive pricing mechanisms and different market structures in the trade of agricultural goods. Examining challenges in agricultural supply chain operations through the lens of micro-economic theory is imperative because it can enable policymakers and social enterprises to develop and design market information provision policy, incentive contracts and market structures for improving farmer and consumer welfare. In each chapter, contributing authors motivate their research questions by providing the context and articulating the importance of their questions. They present their analysis to examine the respective research questions and explain their results. At the end of each chapter, they provide a short list of future research questions.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the proceedings of the 2010 International Conferences on Security Te- nology (SecTech 2010), and Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity (DRBC 2010) – two of the partnering events of the Second International Mega-Conference on Future Generation Information Technology (FGIT 2010). SecTech and DRBC bring together researchers from academia and industry as well as practitioners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of security and disaster recovery methodologies, including their links to c- putational sciences, mathematics and information technology. In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries, which - cludes 250 papers submitted to SecTech/DRBC 2010. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process: 395 of the 1,630 papers were accepted for FGIT 2010, while 57 papers were accepted for SecTech/DRBC 2010. Of the 250 papers 10 were selected for the special FGIT 2010 volume published by Springer in the LNCS series. 34 papers are published in this volume, and 13 papers were wi- drawn due to technical reasons. We would like to acknowledge the great effort of the SecTech/DRBC 2010 Int- national Advisory Boards and members of the International Program Committees, as well as all the organizations and individuals who supported the idea of publishing this volume of proceedings, including SERSC and Springer. Also, the success of these two conferences would not have been possible without the huge support from our sponsors and the work of the Chairs and Organizing Committee.

This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the European Union nations, and other countries including Japan, Australia and Malaysia, it is a legal requirement that food products containing genetically modified organism (GMO) materials are labelled as such in order that customers may make informed purchasing decisions. For manufacturers and consumers to be confident about these assertions, systems must be in place along the entire food chain which support the co-existence of GM and non GM materials whilst maintaining a strict segregation between the two. This book is an output of a European Union-funded project entitled "Co-Extra: GM and non-GM food and feed supply chains: their Co-Existence and Traceability". The objective of this four year project is to provide practical tools and methods for implementing co-existence that will: enable the co-existence of genetically modified (GM) and non-GM crops enable the segregation and tracing of genetically modified organism (GMO) materials and derived products along the food and feed chains anticipate the future expansion of the use of GMOs The project is designed to foster a robustly science-based debate amongst all of the stakeholders involved in the food and feed chains, and the tools will be assessed not only from a technical point of view but with regard to the economic and legal aspects. It also surveys the GMO-related legal regimes and practices that exist in and beyond the EU. This book examines the practical tools and methods available to implement the co-existence and traceability of GM and non-GM food materials along the entire food and feed chains, as demanded by consumers and by legislation in force in the EU and elsewhere. GM and Non-GM Supply Foods is a source of valuable information for food manufacturers, food research institutions and regulatory bodies internationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food Supply Chain Management: Economic, Social and Environmental Perspectives is very different from parts supply chain management as can be seen from the increasing health, safety and environmental concerns that are increasingly garnering the public’s attention about different food supply chain problems. Food supply chain managers face very different environments. For example, there are very specific regulations from government bodies such as FDA or US Department of Agriculture, commodity subsidy programs, ever-changing trade policies, or increasing trends with intense public interest such as sustainability or bioengineering. While the popular press has written extensively about certain food supply chain issues, these books focus on health effects, specific supply chain practices (buy local vs. commodity supply chain), agricultural policy impacts, and problems in the modern food supply chain. Food Supply Chain Management covers the food supply chain comprehensively, and is appropriate for a business student audience and students in agriculture business, natural resources and food science.

This book was released on 2022-05-11 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sultanate of Oman is experiencing a nutrition transition, characterized by shifts in diet, lifestyle and disease burden. The National Nutrition Strategy of Oman 2014-2050 and the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy SARDS 2040 have emphasized the importance of adequate intake of fruits and vegetables while decreasing the consumption of energy-dense foods. FAO collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) and Zubair Small Enterprises Centre (Zubair SEC) to conduct an inclusive Nutrition Sensitive Value Chain Analysis (NSVCA). The geographical focus was on Al Batinah North, one of the main agricultural governorates in Oman. Two commodities were selected by MAFWR and the Ministry of Health based on a scoring method: papaya and carrots. This NSVCA aimed at mapping the current landscape of constraints and opportunities in supply and demand of safe and nutritious food commodities across these two value chains. It focuses on SMEs related to food and agriculture, farmer organizations, smallholders and other actors along the value chains. The NSVCA contributes mainly to SO1, SO3 and SO4 through improved knowledge of the food system in Oman and providing a variety of evidence based intervention and investment opportunities along the value chain. The findings will allow decision-makers to identify specific policy interventions which will leverage the potential of these value chains for both income generation and better nutrition outcomes.
